1101 Glass, Amy U.S. Supreme Court Influence on Cyber Bullying Policy Attend this session and learn how recent decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court can influence the creation of cyber bullying policies by schools and/or school districts. This session will include an introduction to the four (4) seminal U.S. Supreme Court decisions dealing with student 1st Amendment rights and “cyber bullying” type issues/events. Participants will explore these decisions and participate in a discussion about how and why these decisions can guide school policy.

1114 Silverman, Matthew Effectively integrating Wikis into K-5 classrooms Create, collaborate, and communicate like never before with the use of Wikis in your classroom. Come and learn how K-5 teachers integrate Wikis as part of the teaching and learning process. A Wiki is software that allows users to create and edit Web pages. Teachers will show how a Wiki can be used, how to create and maintain one and how to utilize features so that it becomes a place for the entire learning community.

1161 Estrada, Veronica Utilizing Web-based tools for responsive action research during student teaching This multimedia presentation describes our action research project on action research utilizing E-communities and conducted with full-time student teachers in their last semester of coursework. Findings reveal that undergraduate students were able to learn the process of action research through instructional practices that presented the research process in steps, peer support through online discussions, and professor support through feedback on each component of the final project. A working model for teacher educators will be shared.

1203 Rodrigue, Anne Leadership for Learning: Moderating Online Professional Learning Communities Leadership is key to an effective online professional learning community. This interactive session will explore how to e-moderate an online community. What do teacher leaders need to know about adult learners? What e-moderation and technical skills must they acquire? The presenters will outline skills for e-moderators and engage the participants in discussing and modeling these important skills. Participants will leave with specific and practical strategies to use when moderating online communities.

1240 Welch, Thomas Virtual Learning Magnets: Learning unlimited by time and space Forget school reform, redesign, or reinvention; after 20 years we must admit it’s not working for every student or school. CCSSO is reinventing learning for the 21st century. Students from any school work together in a virtual environment to learn, communicate and solve common problems. VLMs include non-Carnegie, performance-based credits, a suite of national assessments, outside content experts and ties to post-secondary institutions. Discussion of the pilot, expansion plans and a breakthrough curriculum design.

They will learn which Web-based program, product, or service to choose based on their own needs and have an opportunity to explore PDOnline courses, the Building Academic Vocabulary word selection Web site, the What Works in Schools staff and parent/guardian/community online surveys, ASPIRE, and other relevant ASCD Web-based products.

1259 Moses, Glenn Embrace MySpace: Safe Uses of Social Networking Tools with Students In this session the educational value of Social Networking will be demonstrated by an administrator who is currently using these tools with students in his school of 720 students. The theme of this session will be why we need to use these tools and how to use them safely. How to sell the using of these tools in your school to parents and school board members will also be presented.

1260 Austermuhl, Edythe Virtual Field Trips to Enhance Content Area Learning Virtual field trips provide content area teachers a unique way to address a content area topic. Field trip activities are designed to include varied learning styles and student abilities. Differentiation is a key component of this instructional method. This presentation will describe the rationale for the activity, the basic components, and how to design a virtual field trip. Attendees will have the opportunity to begin planning their own trip and share ideas with the group.

1301 Blaszak, Brian Moodle: eLearning in the 21st Century Classroom A major challenge met by educational technology has been to unite teacher and learner from a distance. Fundamental changes in society have created new types of learners. As demand for virtual learning increases, educators need new knowledge and tools. This workshop will offer a basic understanding of how educators can best provide anywhere-anytime learning for our 21st Century Classrooms. Participants should bring their own laptops to use Moodle, an open source program, to create an effective online experience.

1303 Smith, Wendy Infusing Technology in the 5E Learning Cycle Get energized to redesign your math and science lessons using the 5E Learning Cycle (Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend, Evaluate) infused with a variety of easy to use technology tools and strategies for student learning. Participants will use an interactive response system to choose the direction of the presentation. Walk away with ideas for using technology to enhance student learning rather than just learning how to use a new technology tool.

1344 Meier, Gene Virtual Education for Native American Students The Wyoming e-Academy of Virtual Education (WeAVE), the only statewide online program in the State of Wyoming, uses both an on-site program and partnerships with several Wyoming school districts to cater to the needs of Native American students. This session will provide participants with an overview of WeAVE’s successes, the strategies WeAVE uses to focus on Native populations, and the methods they use to keep the students in school, successful and headed toward post-secondary education.

1345T Kersaint, Gladis Using Virtual Manipulatives to Teach Mathematics Concepts The purpose of this session is to familiarize participants with virtual manipulatives that drive deeper understanding of mathematics concepts taught in grades 3-12. We will discuss various virtual manipulatives you may find on the internet, and then we will model mathematics lessons using the best of these web-based simulations. We will discuss these products’ ease of use in today’s classrooms with features such as correlations, customization of activities for differentiated curriculum, student assessment and reporting.

1401T Segura, Eugenie A Click Away: Cheating 2.0 Imagine a classroom without boundaries, connecting and collaborating with others who are only a click away. However, as boundaries dissolve, both face-to-face and online schools face the challenge of the e-world and its ease of cheating and plagiarism. In this session, attendees will learn causes and sources of online cheating, receive ideas for assignments that take a proactive approach to the dilemma, and explore ways to empower teachers that are only a click away.

1403T Reardon, Martin Podcasting Demystified Podcasting enriches the classroom learning experience by enabling content to be presented in a way that accords with the YouTube era. The technology to produce a podcast is accessible, and learners from very young to graduate level students can deepen their content knowledge by moving from consumers to producers of podcasts. This session will discuss podcasting, provide examples, and engage participants in small groups with producing audio podcasts that will be uploaded for later access.

This interactive presentation will examine the role of educational leaders in maximizing the power of technology to transform teaching and learning in our schools. Have you taken advantage of the many web tools available online? How about media tools like video cameras, digital cameras and iPods? Learn how to maximize learning for Bilingual and ELL students using the digital media tools available on campus, on your computer and online (most of which are free!). 2101 Martabano, Sarah Differentiating with Web 2.0 Differentiated instruction is a key success factor for enabling change in student achievement. Internet based, Web 2.0 collaboration tools have become prolific, are varied and often free. These tools are being used successfully by teachers to vary classroom instruction, meet the different needs of students, and empower students in cooperative learning environments. This session will provide examples of how teachers are using Web 2.0 tools to deliver lessons and activities that meet all learners’ needs.

2102T Baldwin, Anna Digital Xpress: An Online Writing and Publishing Portal The Digital XPress is an online writing portal used to increase student achievement in English/Language Arts. Specifically, teachers learn to use digital cameras and digital image editing software to stimulate and support student writing in a wide variety of standards-based instructional activities. A teacher-controlled, online publishing environment allows students to publish their written compositions for others to read and react to. See how South Carolina teachers and students are using this system across the curriculum.

2113 Stonecipher, Ronda Mathcasting by Creating, Communicating and Sharing Through Podcasting Participants will learn how podcasting can be used in the math and other subjects as an authentic tool for assessing student learning with the concentration on formative assessment. See how teachers can use podcasting with students to create a cognitive map of their own learning that would demonstrate content such as relationships, precedence, sequence, dependencies, academic vocabulary etc. to accelerate and improve learning.

2114 Ridge, Noel What next? Improving comprehension using electronic texts, and board technology. Electronic texts can be masked, enlarged, highlighted and underlined by a teacher and students so that reading comprehension strategies can be modeled and used effectively. Students can then engage with the interactive texts, providing opportunities to develop their own texts, make choices and determine outcomes. This session with demonstrate Shared Reading with electronic texts using interactive white board technology and show how it enables students and teachers to focus on and interact with the text, figuring out problems together.

2163 Rotilie, Susan The New ArtsConnectEd: An Online Curriculum Tool for Arts Learning The ArtsConnectEd website, a partnership between the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Walker Art Center, provides access to a comprehensive collection of over 90,000 works of art. The newly redesigned site offers teachers and their students tools for creating custom classroom resources. This interactive session will introduce participants to the new site and demonstrate models for the development of meaningful teaching and learning products that connect curricula to museum resources.

2164T Hamilton, Brandon An Action Research Approach to School Reform: Lessons from Chicago This session illustrates action-based learning. A group of educators and consultants developed a web-based laboratory where action research methods were employed to collaboratively develop tools that stakeholders from two very diverse neighborhoods used to reform the curricula. Action research methods were employed collaboratively to identify the realities of the Chicago neighborhoods. Team members then developed websites that collaboratively modeled organizational structures to support the major reform efforts of their unique cultures.

2202 Wolf, Mary Ann Tech Savvy Superintendents Panel Tech Savvy Superintendents, as named by eSchool News, will present cutting-edge initiatives that support teaching and learning while preparing students to be 21st Century citizens. In this interactive session, audience members will prepare and ask questions in order to gain further understanding of these intitiatives.

2239T Scraper, Linda Exploring ASCD's Redesigned PDOnline Courses With reduced budgets and increasing job responsibilities, how does an educator stay abreast of current educational topics? One way is through online professional development courses that can be taken at your convenience without having to travel or find someone to cover your classes. ASCD offers more than 75 such courses and provides a list of accredited colleges and universities that provide graduate credit. In this session, we'll explore the variety of topics available, the newest features, and provide opportunities for individual exploration. All attendees will receive complimentary access to a course of their choosing and the chance to provide topics for future course offerings.

2240 Niguidula, David Graduation by Proficiency: Digital Portfolios as a Tool for Change Can digital portfolios be an alternative to standardized testing? Learn how students in Rhode Island use portfolios to fulfill the new statewide "graduation by proficiency" policy. As educators from Mt. Hope recount their journey, participants will learn how portfolios can link several initiatives including Individual Learning Plans for all students, improving classroom assessments and school accreditation. Participants will gain practical tips for implementation, and see how students and teachers can demonstrate standards – without standardization.

2241T Parsons, Catherine Gaming and Learning Connecting to learners means connecting to the tools of their every day world. Video games are now ubiquitous to two full generations and must be considered when examining curriculum and instruction. Participants will deconstruct the learning and design concepts behind video games, examine how these concepts align with research-based classroom practice, and explore ways in which gaming should be incorporated into the definition of what it means to be literate in society today.

2251 Bosco, James Curriculum Directors' Perspectives on Web 2.0 Web 2.0 applications such as social networking, gaming, wikis, blogs and virtual reality have a large and growing presence in our world. Is Web 2.0 an asset or a problem for schools? What role can they play in improving the learning environment of schools? This presentation will report on a MacArthur foundation funded survey of district curriculum leaders which was done by the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) in cooperation with ASCD.

2257 Morrison, Marcia Let’s Get Personal! Tips to Humanize Online Learning With over 15 years of experience teaching online, the presenters will demonstrate multiple ways to humanize online learning. Some of the strategies that will be modeled are the effective use of discussion groups, teacher feedback, Elluminate interactive, and group projects. Participants will learn students’ views on the advantages of online learning, especially how coursework has “flattened their world” by studying with students from around the country and the world. The Internet allows children to learn through interactive skill builders, to share experiences, to tell or read a story in a variety of ways, to learn about others around the world or to research topics. Participants will learn ways to integrate the Internet into curriculum. Online resources, Internet inquiry units, and management ideas will be shared.

Understand some of the implications of the newer tools in the online world for young learners. The focus is on teaching and learning in the curriculum areas and how Web 2.0 tools can empower teachers and students. This session explores the tools and shares implementation strategies while focusing on curriculum and learning, not just “Gee Whiz!”

The presenter’s 18 years of international 1:1 leadership, will help participants gain a greater sense of possibilities and develop a language for articulating the case for 1:1 computing.

2401 Geary-Rissmiller, Carole Cyber Education in Public Schools: The Future Has Arrived What is Cyber Education? What does it look like? Why would parents choose this option? What effect does this have on the traditional school setting? Online learning has become the wave of the present, not the future. This session will focus on one school district’s response to the need for online offerings in the public school setting. Participants will hear about the development, implementation and struggles associated with operating a district level Cyber Academy.

2402 Maleyko, Glenn The Role of Leadership in Implementing a Technology Integrated Curriculum Participants will discover a staff development model that supports the integration of multimedia and technology throughout the curriculum. The key to this model is professional learning communities and the development of a technology team at the building level. This session references the ISTE Technology Standards for School Administrators and explains how a building technology team supports and debates decisions about technology integration. Participants will actively engage in the session using an infrared responsive card system.

2403T Grote, Michael Cogitate @ Northgate: Tapping into District Creativity Using Open Space Technology Open Space Technology is a highly effective way to hold meetings through an interactive process for dealing with complex issues. It allows participants to garner ideas, gain suggestions from multiple perspectives, and manage their own agenda through dialogue that meets their individual needs. We will share how our district has uniquely used this strategy to bring educators together from across our large urban district to brainstorm, problem solve, collaborate, and revitalize enthusiasm for our practice.

2431T Sheskey, Bill Using Web 2.0 Tools for Authentic Assessments Investigate Web 2.0 learning tools where teachers can develop authentic assessments that allow for the development of higher order thinking skills and collaborative problem solving. In this hands on session, educators will have the opportunity to participate in a live experience of dynamic, interactive document sharing, collaborative writing and class presentations that can be created using wikis and document sharing platforms. Laptops are encouraged for this fast paced, living document experience.

2432 Noble, David Building and sustaining an online teacher community at no cost David Noble will explain how he and colleagues from a variety of schools and sectors in Scotland have created a sustainable ‘community of learning’ using free web tools. The Access Network originally met quarterly in a school and now meets fortnightly via web conference. He will critically engage with the issues around bringing educators together across traditional boundaries and will demonstrate the tools which can be utilised to enhance professionals’ knowledge and skills.

3101T Brady, Jennifer Creating an Online Professional Learning Community for Out-of-School Time Leaders More qualified professionals are needed in the field of out-of-school time (OST) to support the positive development of the whole child. This session will share the opportunities and challenges encountered as the Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University has worked to develop a unique online graduate certificate program that fosters a professional learning community for OST professionals across age groups, experience levels and geographic locations to strengthen after-school and summer programming available to kids.

As we transition from the Industrial Age to the Digital Age, administrators will need to have the knowledge, skills, and disposition to prepare students for future success. ISTE developed the National Educational Technology Standards for Administrators (NETS•A) in 2002, following the wide adoption of the NETS for Students and Teachers. 3120 Preble, William The Respectful Schools Alliance: An On-line Learning and Action Community Collaborative action research can change school climate and teaching. Now Webinars, E-workshops, and Virtual Focus Groups are linking student and adult leaders across North America in a national school leadership alliance. We will showcase efforts to combine on-site professional development with web-based meetings and workshops to support and sustain student led action research. Student leaders will contribute to the presentation via web-cam, discussing their work and how technology is helping them learn together and build respectful schools.

3145 Ellis, Adele On Demand Professional Development with Screencasting, Podcasting, and Survey sites Teachers need professional development to facilitate the use of technology in the classroom. One day workshops and conferences are great for new ideas, but how do we keep the focus going once you are back into the same routine? Here we will share how using screencasts, podcasting, blogs and survey sites allow teachers to review and view key ideas long after the session is over. Teachers can then create screencasts and blogs for students. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own internet capable laptops to begin their own blogs.

Presenters will demonstrate how to effectively and efficiently combine discussion boards, blogs, digital movie-making, graphic organizers, and online critical thinking tools to achieve success with reading and writing curricula. The “clickers” allow teachers to receive instant feedback and engage those quiet, reluctant learners allowing them a voice with a simple push of a button. Teachers can dynamically adjust lessons and track student progress instantly. The session will include a tour of the various systems that are used.

3214 White, Shannon Engaging Learning Beyond Curriculum Boundaries with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Are you looking for a tool that engages learning from a different perspective? Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a key integration tool helps students connect spatially with content and offers opportunities to analyze and create solutions for real world issues. We will share research-based pedagogical approaches to geospatial tools for learner engagement, inquiry and discovery across all content areas. In addition, we offer ready-to-use classroom tested resources, lesson plans, software recommendations and experiences.

3215 Dana, Nancy Using Web 2.0 Technology To Coach Teacher Action Research Come experience the power technology can offer those who engage in and coach action research in their schools and districts as we discuss four critical junctures teachers experience in the action research process and the ways an on-line blogging community and an on-line mentoring tool can help teachers through each of these junctures. Participants view these tools in action and discuss a number of activities (handouts provided) that help educators deepen the action research process.

3253T Leavey, Susan Ethical Uses of the Internet Join us as we discuss copyright, plagiarism and accessibility and the impact that each has on the delivery of classroom and online instruction. Knowing what is acceptable to "borrow" in light of the sheer volume and easy access of material which is available on the Internet can lead to confusion. If we as educators are not sure what can and cannot be used, how can we expect our students to know the difference either?

3254 Lovely, Gail Connect the Dots: Use the Internet to Help Young Learners Learn It's "www dot this" and "www dot that"--the Internet provides a wide variety of resources and tools. How does a digital immigrant teacher "connect the dots" and help 4- to 8-year-old digital natives use online resources and tools for learning? This session will focus on free online tools and resources that can help teachers teach young learners to read, write, do math, and think deeply within learning communities both big and small.

3281T Dieker, Lisa EdSim Lab: Virtual Classroom Management In University of Central Florida’s (UCF) new virtual training tool, teachers practice classroom management with computer-simulated students (and one hidden actor). UCF faculty will discuss the background and development of the EdSim Lab tool, as well as recent research findings. Attendees will see the program in action…and even test themselves in the simulator.

3327 Hyland, Nancy A Journey into Powerful Practice: Not Just Another Electronic Portfolio This session focuses on the impact of electronic portfolios as a reflective tool for teacher practice improvement. Two members of the faculty will discuss their observations about student growth through this process, and a teacher will share how the portfolio experience has impacted student learning. Attendees will have an opportunity to reflect, engage with other professionals, and ask questions about the portfolio process. A handout on one electronic portfolio option will be available to participants.
